Botswana’s New President Duma Boko Unveils Initial Cabinet Appointments

Botswana’s President Duma Boko of the UDC appointed key ministers to reflect his administration’s focus: Ndaba Gaolathe for Finance, Phenyo Butale for International Relations, Lesego Chombo for Youth and Gender, Micus Chimbombi for Lands and Agriculture, Stephen Modise for Health (with opposition leader Lawrence Ookeditse as Deputy), and Nono Kgafela-Mokoka for the new Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education.

Botswana’s President Duma Boko, elected as head of the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), has appointed key cabinet members shortly after his inauguration. Among the notable appointments, Ndaba Gaolathe, UDC’s deputy president, will serve as Minister of Finance, emphasizing economic development. Phenyo Butale takes on the role of Minister of International Relations, expected to guide Botswana’s foreign policy. Lesego Chombo, with a background in law and public advocacy, will lead the Ministry of Youth and Gender, focusing on equality and youth empowerment, while Micus Chimbombi’s role as Minister of Lands and Agriculture signals a commitment to agricultural reform. The Ministry of Health will be led by Stephen Modise, with opposition leader Lawrence Ookeditse as his deputy, marking a collaborative approach. Additionally, Nono Kgafela-Mokoka will head the newly created Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education, underscoring the administration’s focus on child welfare and education.
