Nigeria Becomes First in Africa to Receive Mpox Vaccines - WHO
Nigeria received 10,000 mpox vaccine doses, becoming the first African nation to do so. On 14 August 2024, WHO declared mpox a global health emergency, and the US donated Jynneos vaccines for distribution in five high-risk states. Nigeria's Health Minister praised the donation and emphasized vigilance in mpox control. The vaccine will target 5,000 high-risk individuals, with WHO supporting surveillance, lab capacity, and cross-border monitoring. WHO highlights gaps in vaccine access and is working to boost availability in Africa.
