Nigeria’s recent reforms—including the removal of fuel and electricity subsidies, the unification and liberalization of the foreign-exchange regime, and a tighter monetary policy with higher interest rates—are beginning to yield results. These measures have helped stabilize the naira, narrow the gap between official and parallel exchange rates, and restore investor confidence. The Central Bank has returned to orthodox macroprudential tools, halted monetary financing, and rebuilt foreign reserves to over $40 billion. Meanwhile, efforts to boost tax revenue and implement World Bank–supported cash transfer programs are helping cushion the impact on vulnerable populations.
As a new German government begins to shape its partnerships with African countries, Nigeria—Africa’s most populous nation and largest economy—must not be overlooked.
